The Manchester Vision project is a not-for-profit initiative that produces regular films on people, organisations and campaigns that are seeking to have a positive social impact in the wider city region.

Burnage Good Neighbours is an example of the difference that volunteering can make in people’s lives. There are Good Neighbours care groups across South of Manchester, all providing support for older people and adults with other specific difficulties.

The services are delivered free of charge as a result of the tremendous volunteer support the organisations’ receive.

Good Neighbours volunteers work with the Care Group Co-ordinators to provide essential support such as a befriending and visiting, carrying out emergency food shopping, transport to hospital appointments, wheelchair pushing, day trips, exercise and art classes and coffee mornings. The list goes on. The focus is on reducing isolation and loneliness and increasing independence.

Loneliness and isolation are major problems in the UK today. Around 17% of older people regularly go for more than a week at a time without any contact with friends and family. And a recent report revealed that poverty affects some 2,300,000 older people in Britain - 21% of all pensioners in the UK today.

Manchester Vision project director Mike Todd explained why the Mustard Tree was chosen to feature in the latest film:

“We focused on Burnage Good Neighbours to illustrate the very important but often overlooked impact that work like this can I have, especially at this time of year. The staff and volunteers connected with good neighbours make a tremendous difference in people’s lives.”

The Manchester Care Group Association are always looking for new volunteers and welcome referrals about any people who might benefit from the services they provide.
